What is thymosin alpha 1

Thymosin alpha 1 (abbreviated as Tα1) is a polypeptide composed of 28 amino acids. Its chemical structure and spatial conformation are identical to the thymosin alpha 1 naturally present in the human body. Currently, thymosin alpha 1 demonstrates promising immunomodulatory effects and therapeutic potential in treating various conditions including viral hepatitis, infectious diseases, immunodeficiency disorders, sepsis, and tumors, thereby safeguarding patients’ immune defenses.

Mechanism of Action of Thymosin Alpha 1

Thymosin alpha 1 influences the quantity and function of multiple immune cells through direct or indirect pathways. It acts synergistically with both innate immunity (the natural defense system present at birth) and adaptive immunity (specific immunity acquired through exposure to particular antigens) to defend against external pathogens like bacteria and viruses, while also eliminating abnormal cells such as tumor cells. Thymosin alpha 1 promotes T-cell proliferation, differentiation, and maturation, regulates T-lymphocyte subset ratios, and induces the production of cytokines including macrophages, interleukins (immune-modulating substances produced by white blood cells), and interferons (glycoproteins that regulate immune responses), thereby exerting immune-modulating functions. It also enhances dendritic cell activation and increases natural killer cell activity.
